What’s Happening Beneath Your Feet?
What if some of the most important organisms in your garden—and in every forest around us—are ones you rarely even see? Beneath our feet lies an astonishing hidden world of fungi: vast networks that help plants find water and nutrients, recycle fallen leaves and trees, build healthy soils, support wildlife, and help entire ecosystems function.
On September 29, come see that world as you’ve never seen it before!
The Gardening For Life Project, Conserving Carolina, and the Congregational Church, UCC in Tryon invite you to a free community screening of the acclaimed documentary Fantastic Fungi at the Tryon Theatre.
Through breath-taking, extraordinary time-lapse photography, Fantastic Fungi takes us underground to explore the mysterious world of mushrooms and mycelium—and the remarkable relationships connecting fungi, plants, forests, wildlife, and people.
The film has earned rave reviews, including a 100% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, where it is described as “visually dazzling” and “thought-provoking.” RogerEbert.com went even further, calling it “mind-blowing, soul-cleansing and yes, immensely entertaining.”
Seeing this film on the big screen will be an awe inspiring event! See a preview here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bxABOiay6oA
And fungi deserve the attention!
An estimated 80–90% of plant species form partnerships with mycorrhizal fungi. Fungi are also among nature’s great recyclers, breaking down organic matter and returning nutrients to the soil. They play essential roles in forest health, food webs, and the carbon cycle—and researchers are investigating their potential in medicine, pollution cleanup, environmental restoration, and sustainable materials.
But perhaps the most fascinating message of Fantastic Fungi is a simple one: the natural world is far more interconnected than it appears.
Come curious. You may never look at a mushroom—or the ground beneath your feet—the same way again.
Space is limited and pre-registration is required.
Doors and the Tryon Theatre box office open at 6:30 PM. Please arrive before 7:00 PM for check-in, concessions, and seating. Concessions will be available for purchase; no outside liquids are permitted in the theater.
