Why Plant Native Plants?

Native plants are much more than beautiful garden additions — they are essential players in our local ecosystem. Unlike ornamental non-natives or “nativars,” true native species have co-evolved with local wildlife, offering dependable food and habitat for pollinators like bees, butterflies, birds, and other beneficial insects.

Here’s why planting natives matters:

  • Support Wildlife: Native plants provide the nectar, pollen, seeds, and habitat that local insects and birds rely on throughout the year.

  • Boost Biodiversity: A diverse native garden can support more species — meaning a healthier, more resilient local environment.

  • Less Maintenance: Once established, natives are adapted to local soils and climates, often needing less water and fertilizer than non-native alternatives.

  • Protect Pollinators: Monarch butterflies, for example, depend on milkweed — a native host plant — for their caterpillars to survive.

By choosing native plants, you’re transforming your landscape into a habitatscape!
